Information for My Tiny Wedding Guest
– Where are you? The Red River Gorge is located about an hour southeast of Lexington, Kentucky. Cities nearby would be Slade, Kentucky or Pine Ridge, Kentucky.
-How can I obtain directions to the ceremony site? About a week before the ceremony, the couple will email you a link to the directions.
– How difficult is this hike going to be? It depends on your definition of difficult. Yes, we have many hills and cliffs…but you will not be climbing cliffs or going up or down any steep, steep hills for the wedding day. Depending on the site your couple has chosen, the hike will either be on a paved surface or on a dirt path. None of our hikes (even the paved paths) are really suitable for flip flops. I’m just saying this because I’ve seen many a wedding guest walk the trail barefoot because their flip-flops blew out.
-I heard you have poisonous snakes in the area. Should I be worried? We have two variations of poisonous snakes. The Copperhead and the Timber Rattlesnake. You probably will not see a rattlesnake. You might see a copperhead…even on the paved trails. The place is not overtaken with copperheads by any means, but they are out there and we have seen them while hiking out to a ceremony site. Unprovoked, they are not aggressive. If you are worried about them, remember…their little teeth probably cannot penetrate through shoes…but can penetrate through bare skin when you are wearing sandals.
–When to arrive? It’s best to plan on arriving about 15 minutes before the wedding couple have asked you to arrive. We have curvy roads and usually you will get behind someone who drives slllooooow. Allowing a 15 minute cushion should get you there on time.
-Do I REALLY need to follow the instructions on the directions page? I mean, I’m going to follow Uncle George and he knows where he’s going. Number one reason why guest do not make it to the ceremony site until after the ceremony is over: They did not follow the instructions provided on the directions page and lost Uncle George while following and they somehow got separated from the convoy. It’s very easy to do. So easy, it happens about 7 out of 10 weddings that we do. Don’t be that person.
– What to wear. The best thing to do is to ask the couple whether this is a formal or casual ceremony. Keep in mind, even a formal ceremony in the Red River Gorge is not really “formal”. Because of the hikes, the guest will need to wear suitable shoes to walk in. The exception to this rule is “Woodland Chapel”, “Shawnee Chapel” and “Afternoon Delight”. If the bride is having the ceremony anywhere other than these three locations, walking shoes should be worn to prevent twisted ankles (even our “paved paths” are a bit uneven in some spots). When in doubt, wear suitable walking shoes and bring your dress shoes with you. If the wedding guest are not wearing proper foot attire for a specific location, we may have to switch the ceremony site at the last minute. You do not want to do that to the couple, now do you? Guys-please relay this very important bit of information to your date. Trust me, she doesn’t want to be that person who is the reason we move the ceremony location. Now that would be embarrassing.
– Insect repellent? Yes, unless it’s a wedding in October-April.
-Umbrellas? Oh yes! Click here to see why.
-Water? It’s always a good idea to have some water on you.
-Chair? Most of our sites cannot accommodate chairs. If they do, the wedding couple usually rents them from us.
-Do you have a rain backup plan? Yes! Unless otherwise noted, the ceremony will be at the Barn at Three Feathers Farm if the couple chooses to call it because of rain. We will make that call one hour before we are scheduled to meet. CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS
